mending and hemming

The sunhat was mended, just in time for the weather to turn chilly.. the pants were hemmed, just in time for a trip out of town. I decided to buy a backpack for the little one, it has buckles and padded straps, and things it would just be tougher than it's worth for me to do. So far he seems to like it, but it did make a little red spot on his neck.

Mini Backpack

Wouldn't it be nice if the little one could carry some of his own things? Just think, snacks and toys right there on your back! This might be one that's better to buy than make, I'm just pondering at this point.

Messenger Bag

I almost finished this today! I had been planning to make one from scratch, then looked around at all the pants I have that are busted out at the knees (or butt) and turned one of them into a great bag! I used the back of one leg for the bottom of the bag and the other leg for a flap. I haven't put on a strap yet, I'm thinking of looking at Goodwill for a belt that might make a nice strap. This one might actually be a diaper bag for my cousin; I've got plenty more pants to be turned into another one for me!

Ao Dai and 'Tie' Gored skirt

These are a set: a friend brought a beautiful reversible red-and-gold silk brocade from Singapore, I've been daydreaming for almost a year what to make from it. Then I checked out folkwear patterns and found the lovely Vietnamese Ao Dai (they say that red and gold is for a wedding outfit.. oh well). I'm picturing it a little shorter, more like a fitted jacket than a tunic. If I have enough, I want to make a swirly many-gored skirt, swapping sides of the reversible fabric. Way fun for dancing!

Khaki Flared Skirt

This one is still just fabirc and inspiration. I have oodles of a very drapey lightweight khaki polyester. I want to sort of copy a black calf-length skirt I have, with sort of a narrow yoke/wide waistband, that flares out around the knees.

Red Gored Skirt

This is a dark red jacquard, ankle length yoked skirt, made with 4 panels. All I need to do is put fasteners (probably buttons) at the side openings and hem it.

so, since no-one else is reading this anyway, I'm going to use it to keep track of some scattered project ideas. I'll start off with a list of things I'm contemplating, then I can go into each one in detail as later posts.

Sewing:
red gored skirt
khaki flared skirt
Ao Dai
'tie' gored skirt
messenger bag
mini backpack
mend hat
hem pants
dog jacket
ankle-length skirt
flannel petticoats
toddler suit
green wool coat

Knitting:
kilt hose
baby soaker(s)
cotton tee
white gloves

now, with a list to refer to, I have no excuse for not getting it all done, right?

arty photos

As I suggested to myself in a previous post, a digital camera seems to be essential for keeping any sort of decent blog. So we got one that we're happy with all 'round, still reading the manual for what the different settings really mean. And of course, if one's camera has a macro/close-up setting, one must use it to take arty close-ups, no?

is this a diary?

I'm still thinking about how exactly this - what do you kids call 'em - 'blog' thing is going to work for me. Should I be funny? Should I post something every day? Should I hie me to a store and get a camera so I can post lots of pictures? It most likely doesn't matter, since no-one's reading it anyway. I ordered some yarn today, and some needles, which I'm really excited about. Till they arrive, my current project is on hold: my dpns are kind of sticky.

Hello, world

So, yeah, I noodle on the 'net, and while I was checking out a friend's blog, Blogger asked me if I wanted to join. And I said 'OK' because I thought it might be fun. We'll see.

About the name - I like yarn, and I'm somewhat Scottish. My husband says my hair is particularly Scottish (i. e. rebellious). I also like double entendres.
